It was on a Saturday when my mother went to the market. I was doing my homework when suddenly I saw my younger brother with a match box and a candle. He was trying to light a candle. I ran hurriedly towards him and snatched the match box from him. I told him not to play with matches . I went and kept it in the kitchen. After sometime he crept into the kitchen quietly, went and took the match box and went under my bed and lit the candle.
As I was coming towards the bedroom, he heard my footsteps. He came out and pretended to have been sleeping. It was lunchtime and mother had already cooked before she went to the market. I woke him up and told him it was lunchtime.
He woke up went to eat but the candle was still under my bed. After sometime I smelt smoke but I could not find out where it was coming from. I went outside to see if it was coming from the neighbouring house. While I was outside, my younger brother also smelt the smoke and he knew that the bed was already in flames. He came ran towards me. He told me that there was a fire! I thought he was joking but as I was getting into the house, I saw coal black clouds of smoke making me shout, “Fire! Fire! Fire! “
As soon as the neighbours heard me, they came out quickly and started asking me what had started the fire. After that the men who were as brave as lions went inside and took some of the things from the house and brought them outside but there was a person left behind and did not know the way to get outside. He shouted, “Help! Help!” but nobody heard him. When the police men came, they did not know what to do.
One of the police men heard the cry of that man and telephoned the ambulance and the firemen. He told the others and crowd who were astonished by what the police man said. The friend of the man was shedding bears through his rudy cheeks. The man was in great danger of getting burnt. When my brother heard this, he knew that he could save this man because he knew if the man died he would be guilty of his death. He ran quickly inside the house searched for that man but he could not find him. He did not know what to do and he started crying. When other was almost near the house from work, she saw clouds of smoke. She rushed to find out what was wrong. When she found out that it was a fire from the house ,she walked faster towards the house and when she reached there and saw me she asked where my brother was, I could not tell her that he was in the house .
She started asking what happened and where my brother was. That's when I told her that he was inside the house. She started screaming saying that he would get burnt. The arrival of the firemen was like angels summoned from heaven. Also the ambulance came. Firemen put out the fire and then they were taken to the hospital. My mother and I were crying so loudly that we could not be controlled.
The victims were taken to the hospital as we followed them on foot because we were not allowed to go with them in the ambulance.
An hour later, we were given the news. They did not make it, God had already taken them.
After that news my mother remembered how she lost father and her own mother in a fire. She collapsed and died on the spot. I knew I was an orphan. I was adopted by a kind neighbour. From then hence forth I learnt not to play with fire.
